BREAKING: Democrats on the House Oversight committee incinerate Donald Trump for his fascist takeover of Washington D.C. as “dictator-level stuff” and vow to take immediate action.
Democrats are bravely refusing to take this injustice lying down…
“Deploying the military on DC’s streets only creates fear and chaos. Donald Trump will be held accountable for this brazen power grab,” the group’s official account wrote on X.
Congressman Robert Garcia, the ranking member on the committee, slammed Trump for transparently seeking to distract the public with an “unnecessary stunt” that is “100 percent politically motivated.”
“Donald Trump’s economy is failing, his Epstein files cover-up won’t go away, and public support for his agenda is way down. So it’s no surprise that he is trying to distract the American public,” Garcia stated. “Despite Republican claims, violent crime in D.C. is at a 30-year low, including Trump’s first term.”
“Committee Democrats have long supported Washington D.C.’s right to decide how to govern itself — and we will keep championing this right for its more than 700,000 residents,” he added.
Earlier today, Trump announced that he is seizing control of the Washington, DC Metropolitan police in a “historic action” designed to “take the capital back” and stop the “crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse” and fight “bloodthirsty criminals” and “roving mobs of wild youth.”
He also announced that he will be deploying 800 National Guard troops to the city to battle the supposedly “out of control” crimes rates. As The New York Times has pointed out, federal officials reported in January that violent crime in the city had dropped to a 30-year low.
Furthermore, deploying the guard in such a fashion is a flagrant violation of The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 which expressly forbids the U.S. military from conducting “law enforcement” operations within the United States.
The only time that Posse Comitatus can be broken by the president is when Congress grants express permission, which it hasn’t, or when the Insurrection Act has been invoked, which it hasn’t.
Under saner political conditions, this kind of blatantly authoritarian power grab and violation of the law would result in immediate impeachment proceedings. Unfortunately, the Republicans in Congress have fully thrown in with the MAGA cult, abandoning their responsibilities in pursuit of power. It will fall to voters to hold them accountable.
